Il primo studio sperimentale sulla PSSD del team dell'Università degli Studi di Milano è stato pubblicato, ma la ricerca deve andare avanti

A Luglio 2021 abbiamo finalmente conosciuto gli interessanti risultati dello studio sulla PSSD sinora condotto dal team dell'Università degli Studi di Milano - Silvia Giatti, Silvia Diviccaro, Lucia Cioffi, Eva Falvo, Donatella Caruso, Roberto C. Melcangi.

I risultati dimostrano che vi sono alterazioni nei livelli di vari neurosteroidi in diverse sedi del sistema nervoso di ratti cui è stato somministrato lo SSRI paroxetina, durante il trattamento e 30 giorni dopo la sospensione. Questa è una prova di alterazioni biologiche persistenti causate dallo SSRI e avanza l'ipotesi che l'azione sui neurosteroidi possa costituire un probabile bersaglio farmacologico. 

Tuttavia, non è ancora chiaro se queste alterazioni siano le stesse che possano causare i sintomi di disfunzione sessuale (talvolta anche emotiva e cognitiva) persistente in alcune persone che hanno fatto un precedente uso di SSRI/SNRI.

Il team è però ben motivato a proseguire la ricerca per comprendere sempre meglio i meccanismi alla base della sindrome, cosa necessaria all'individuazione di un valido trattamento. In July 2021 we finally got to know the interesting results of the study on PSSD carried out so far by the team from the University of Milan - Silvia Giatti, Silvia Diviccaro, Lucia Cioffi, Eva Falvo, Donatella Caruso, Roberto C. Melcangi.

"Effects of paroxetine treatment and its withdrawal on neurosteroidogenesis"

The results show that there are alterations in the levels of various neurosteroids in different sites of the nervous system of rats administered the SSRI paroxetine, during treatment and 30 days after withdrawal. This is evidence of persistent biological changes caused by the SSRI and advances the hypothesis that its action on neurosteroids may be a likely pharmacological target. 

But it is not yet clear whether these alterations are the same as those that may cause symptoms of persistent sexual (sometimes also emotional and cognitive) dysfunction in some people who have previously used SSRIs/SNRIs.

However, the team is well motivated to continue research in order to better understand the underlying mechanisms of the syndrome, which is necessary for the identification of a valid treatment.
