La condizione veniva descritta come difficile da diagnosticare perché non esisteva una definizione comunemente accettata. Allo stesso tempo, stavano comparendo una serie di nuovi siti web e discussioni online, molti dei quali sembravano avere interpretazioni leggermente diverse di ciò che è e non è PSSD. Anche se la condizione era già stata ben caratterizzata in letteratura, in particolare in relazione alle caratteristiche distintive della diminuzione della sensazione genitale e orgasmica, sembrava esserci la necessità di un insieme formale di criteri.
